Whether this is your first foray in pageantry, or you are a seasoned veteran, we are excited to help write your story. As you embark on your newest adventure as a delegate within our organization, we know it can seem overwhelming. You're beginning a thrilling journey filled with glamour, purpose, and the opportunity to make a profound impact on a national stage. Keep reading for some of our expert tips as you take your first steps as a delegate of the Miss Earth USA organization.
1. Embrace Your Role as a Leader and Ambassador
A Miss Earth USA title holds the power to inspire countless women and girls within your community and beyond, not to mention the general public! You have already been working tirelessly to make an impact, and we encourage you to find ways to use this platform not only to advocate for environmental sustainability but also to empower young women from all walks of life. Be a beacon of strength and confidence, and encourage others to chase their dreams unapologetically.
2. Stay Well-Informed Knowledge is empowerment.
Being a community leader and an environmental advocate is no small task. You likely have worked to stay informed up until this point, and as a delegate for the Miss Earth USA organization, it is even more important to make sure you are up to date with current news and trends. We are constantly learning and growing, making it crucial to deepen your understanding of environmental issues and the challenges we face globally. This not only aids your cause and community work, but it also helps you continue to gain knowledge and become an authority in your field.
3. Retain a Supportive Team
Just like sustainability and the environment go hand in hand, a supportive team is essential for your success. You likely already have a team of family and friends who have supported you on your pageant and advocacy journey – it is key to continue to nurture these relationships. In addition to those you are closest to, set a goal of connecting with mentors, activists, and professionals who share your passion. Together, we can create an empowering network of community activists who are passionate about sustainability, the environment, and the Miss Earth USA organization.
4. Prepare for the Stage
While this might seem like an obvious tip, it is important to keep in mind that even the most seasoned delegates need to prepare for stage performance. We are extremely excited that you have been inducted as a member of the Miss Earth USA organization, and we can’t wait to see where you go. From local and state pageants, to our national pageant, and beyond, it is important to be prepared for each next step.
5. Take Time for Yourself and Others
Perhaps one of the most important tips we can give is that you are not alone. This advice is two-fold:
First, your mental health is a priority–you are never alone, and it is key to reach out if you feel that you need help. Our goal is to create a safe space for all delegates to recognize if and when they need help and to find support as it is needed. One of our initiatives is a partnership with BetterHelp to provide support to all delegates. Take time to explore this opportunity and learn how you can find the support you need (even if you don’t think you need it!).
Second, The Miss Earth USA organization is focused on creating a network of community advocates and partners. As you move through the organization, take time to make connections and build relationships these are relationships that we hope will last long past your time as a delegate. You are all leaders within your communities, and we can only get stronger by working together to create a movement for positive change.
6. Communication is Key
While the whole “communication is key” spiel might be overdone, it really is important to be a confident, professional communicator. You will likely be communicating with many different people and organizations, and how you communicate can make or break the relationship. Focus on positive communication that upholds a professional standard. Be prepared to communicate over email, the phone, or in person, for example. You may also decide to practice your communication skills by meeting one-on-one with a trusted member of your circle or a pageant coach.
7. Curate Your Cause
We know that this is not the end goal for you–just a stepping stone along the way. Throughout the whirlwind of excitement that being part of the Miss Earth USA organization brings, make sure not to let your cause become stagnant. Reevaluate your goals, take a look at where you want to be in two, five or ten years from now, and look at what your community needs. The Miss Earth USA organization is a great place for you to network and expand your reach and your cause.
8. Be Authentic
Have you ever talked to someone and realized that their eyes light up when they are passionate about the conversation? We want to see that from you. As you experience the opportunities and excitement of being a representative of Miss Earth USA, don’t forget to be yourself! We want to get to know who you are and what makes you unique. Being true to yourself will not only allow you to feel comfortable, but it will also help you build community and create relationships that will last a lifetime.
9. Cherish the Journey
Your time as a pageant delegate will be filled with transformative experiences, personal growth, and lifelong connections, but it won’t last forever (this is a good thing, we promise!). Remember to cherish every moment and enjoy each new experience as it comes.
Where does this leave you?
